Would it be possible to get crown moulding? The answer to that question is absolutely. Crown adds something to a kitchen that cannot really be translated into words. It has that captivating transience that instantly states that this is a nice kitchen because you have crown. You don’t even need the rest of the kitchen. The crown itself can say everything but it’s best to have the kitchen to put the crown on. More importantly though, it has to fit the rest of your kitchen. You can’t go shake and then go all messy and busy up top. You need to keep it all evened out, keep the flow going. Now, there’s so many profiles to choose from. Here at DCWS, I use Freud’s crown routing set offering 9 different options of crown moulding. And it is milled here locally in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario.

MDF crown, solid wood crown—which is the right way to go? To me, it all depends on the kitchen and what the client is wanting.  I don’t think there’s any right answer here. It’s what works best for you. Pros of MDF crown is that it is not wood, so it doesn’t move. Wood moves. Wood is alive meaning it takes on and releases moisture. So, if you’re going with a clean, painted, sleek kitchen, then I really don’t think there’s any need to spend the money on solid wood crown. On the other hand, if the feel of your kitchen is really to

bring out the grains of some fine maple, then, of course, solid wood crown is the way to go.

When it comes to crown it needs to match the kitchen and crown can be stained or painted as well as antiqued. As well, crown varies in width, generally ranging from 2-5 inches. The thicker the trim, the more impact it will make on the kitchen. In some kitchens, a 5-inch crown would be completely overwhelming where in a different kitchen, it would complement its expression beautifully. This is something we go over when designing your kitchen. While here, I’ll gently touch on beads. Beads and dentals are accessories to a kitchen as well as to the crown. It’s something that can easily get too busy and create a confusing and overwhelming feel to your kitchen but when these are all in harmony, there’s a flow. Dentals. I make my own dentals. The spacing and size can all be determined and custom made to suit with samples to help you see your choice. This area of millwork is my specialty and with me as your cabinetmaker you can take your kitchen to the next level of elegance and beauty.
